Faculty Profile: Jefferson Beavers
Fresno State alumni, graduate student, and part-time lecturer
Jefferson Beavers is determined to make an impact and provide
valuable knowledge to his students. It’s his way of giving back
to the university where he started.
“While I attended Fresno State, I
always told myself that I wanted to help out one day,” Beavers
said. “I wanted to be a part of the program that taught me well
and has gotten me where I am today. This also gives me the
chance to reconnect with the faculty.”
The Dinuba native graduated in 1996
with his bachelor’s degree in journalism with an emphasis in
news-editorial and earned the Outstanding MCJ Graduate Award.
After graduating, Beavers went on to work at four newspapers. He
started working as a reporter at the Gustine Press-Standard and
then as a copy editor at the Fairfield Daily Republic. He went
on to work at the Modesto Bee and then the Fresno Bee.
He has taught desktop publishing for
the MCJ Department and English 1, Intro to College Writing for
the English Department. He is currently teaching MCJ 102W, the
introduction to reporting class.
Along with teaching, Beavers is a
student in the Master of Fine Arts Program, where his
concentration is in creative non-fiction.
Jefferson also runs his own freelance
publishing company, Busy Beavers’ Publishing Company, and, as if
he wasn’t busy enough, he also writes an independent film blog
for Fresno Famous and a MP3 blog on Blogspot.
Throughout his career in print
journalism, Beavers has made many friends, some of whom he uses
to help benefit his students who are quickly approaching their
first jobs.
Beavers enjoys being able to help his
students by equipping them with not only important knowledge,
but also media contacts that can potentially help their careers.
