Kappa Tau Alpha
An induction ceremony was held
on Thursday, April 20, to commemorate the six newest members of
the Dayle H. Molen Chapter, of Kappa Tau Alpha, a journalism
honor society. Inductees were awarded with Kappa Tau Alpha pins
and certificates.
To honor academic
excellence, each year the chapter selects the top students from
the mass communication and journalism graduating class and asks
them to join.
“This is an honor
society and one that is reserved for the very best students,”
said Dr. Tamyra Pierce, KTA advisor. Pierce, who is an Assistant
Professor and the Graduate Director for the MCJ Department, said
that membership is based solely on scholarship and character.
Inductees included
Joshua Bacon (3.97 GPA), Jamie Buckner (3.93 GPA), Sarah
Soghomonian (3.94 GPA), Jessica Szalay (3.91 GPA), Christine
Park (Graduate Student and also named “top Scholar”, 4.0 GPA),
and Nicole Yavasile (Graduate Student—4.0 GPA).
The chapter invites
seniors and graduate students with a 3.5 GPA and higher, the
students who rank in the top 10 percent of their class who are
eligible to join.
There are 93 chapters
nationwide. The MCJ chapter was established in 1987.
There is a fee of $20
to become a member, which covers the cost of the pin and award certificate.
Membership is for life.
“It is an honor to be
selected as a member of KTA,” Pierce said. “It
means that you have achieved academic excellence and for this, students
should feel honored and proud to have been selected.” |
