Conjugate Acids and Bases
HC2H3O2 is an acid.
NaC2H3O2 is a base.
Because they differ by only one proton, they form a conjugate acid-base pair.
HC2H3O2 <--> H+ + C2H3O2-
NH4+ <--> H+ + NH3
H2CO3 <--> H+ + HCO3-
HCO3- <--> H+ + CO32-
This concept is very important when describing buffers, where a mixture of an acid and its conjugate base is used to control the pH of a solution.
