Percentage by Mass Example
5.45 g of NaCl is added to 100 mL of water. What is the weight percent?

We realize that "weight percent" really means "Percentage by Mass" and that the amount of water should be in grams, not milliliters, but since the density of water is 1.00 g/mL we can convert from mL to grams with 100 mL x 1.00 g/mL = 100 g.

grams solute = grams NaCl = 5.45 grams
grams solution = grams water + grams NaCl = 100 g + 5.45 g = 105.45 g
