MANDATORY ORIENTATION BEFORE BEGINNING INTERNSHIP SEMESTER

Students who have current or prior sworn experience in corrections or law enforcement should contact Dr. Schweizer, the interim department internship coordinator, for a possible waiver of actual internship hours though written work will still be required..
Academic Prerequisites: The following courses must have been completed or you must be currently enrolled, to take an internship course or to enroll under the professional experience option: Crim. 2, 20, 102, 112. Students in their freshman or sophomore year will not be permitted to enroll for internship hours. Students should be in their senior year, with some exceptions for students in the second semester of their junior year.

NOTE: Most law enforcement agencies accepting internship students require thorough background checks prior to be approved. Such checks can easily take one or more months to complete. It is important for students to begin the application process with their agency of choice as soon as possible, even before the semester in which they enroll for internship credit. If you intend to return to a home outside of the Central Valley at the end of your studies and wish to do your internship last in your home town/county, contact Dr. Schweizer at the beginning of the semester BEFORE the semester in which you intend to enroll for internship credit.

If you have a criminal conviction, are currently pending a disposition or trial in a criminal matter, or have other issues which may affect your suitability for criminal justice employment (government or related employment in the private sector) you must bring this to the attention of Dr. Schweizer, Charlie Shuler and/or Rosalinda Acosta racosta@csufresno.edu who provides placements for students with area agencies. If you are currently undergoing mental health treatment, your internship opportunities may be limited. Your option coordinators, however, may be able to assist you. Also review additional requirements for corrections related internships. Also review the syllabus for more detailed information.

If you are seeking an internship organization/agency on your own, you must obtain final approval from the option internship coordinators or through the faculty member assigned to your internship course section..

Above faculty additionally will meet with students by appointment.

Contact Dr. Schweizer, the interim department internship coordinator for specifics regarding internships requirements and procedures: haralds@csufresno.edu
ALL PROBLEMS OR ISSUES INVOLVING AGENCY PLACEMENT, CONFLICTS EXPERIENCED AT THE AGENCY, AND ANY OTHER ISSUES THAT AFFECT THE ABILITY OF THE STUDENT TO SUCCESSFULL COMPLETE THE INTERNSHIP AND ALL RELATED REQUIREMENTS, MUST BE DOCUMENTED VIA EMAIL TO THE FACULTY HANDLING THE INTERNSHIP SECTION AND/OR THE INTERNSHIP COORDINATOR
