Prior research has shown that C. briggsae hybrids [crosses between two strains (AF16 and HK104) which still contain the original mitochondrial genome of the hermaphrodite mother] and cybrids (individuals with the nuclear genome of one strain and the mitochondrial genome of the other) will have reduced fitness levels (determined by self-brood sizes). The objective of my project is to determine whether C. briggsae cybrids are able to recover wild-type fecundity levels after multiple generations and, if so, by what mechanism do they recover fitness. |
