Math 100. Exploring Mathematics.

Review for test 2

Test 2 will be on chapters 3 and 4 and will contain 4 problems. One problem will be a list of true/false questions and ask for brief explanations; the others will require longer calculation, more creativity, and/or ask for a longer explanation. Review the following topics/problems:

Place value: integers and decimals
Bases other than 10 (convert numbers from one base to another, perform addition/subtraction in another base, word problems)
Divisibility (important terms: divides, divisible by, factor, divisor, multiple)
Prime factorization, GCD (aka GCF), LCM
Various properties of rational/irrational numbers
Rational numbers as fractions and decimals (convert a fraction into a decimal, convert a finite/periodic decimal into a fraction)
Number sets (definitions, examples, notations, set inclusions, closure properties for four basic operations)
Pattern problems (how many dots/squares/etc. are there in the n-th figure)
Word problems that can be solved using equations or other algebraic thinking
Sum of consecutive integers in any range

Note: you may have noticed that the book contains a lot of investigations on algebra tiles. We did not do any of those and therefore algebra tiles will NOT be on the test.
