TPS Assignment: Car Rental

You need to rent a car. You know the type of car you want to rent and the dates for which you want to rent it, but are not sure which rental car agency would give you the best deal. So you call around. From the time you contact a rental car agency for preliminary information (via the phone, Internet, etc.) until you return the rented car, your interaction with the agency goes through a number of distinct phases. By "phase" is meant a series of steps that are part of one larger task and occur in the same time period with a distinct beginning time and ending time. For instance, "reserve a car" would constitute a phase.

Identify the various phases from the viewpoint of the rental agency. List them in terms of their logical/temporal order (first, next, then, finally). Number each phase. For each phase discuss:

1. The data generated/captured by the rental agency (not by you, the customer) during that phase, with a rationale for each (the reason/purpose why the rental agency would need to collect it). Make sure you cover data collected for both operational reasons (to enable operational staff to do their work) and managerial reasons (to enable management to assess how well the work is performed and whether they are reaching the various objectives associated with a car rental).
