Welcome…

On behalf of the Teacher Preparation Option in the Department of Kinesiology at CSU, Fresno we would like to extend a warm “hello” to all the physical educators in the Fresno Unified School District. It is the goal of this and future newsletters to provide physical educators with quality information and resources from the field of physical education.  More importantly, the newsletter will address current issues related to student fitness levels, state physical education standards and curriculum development for developmentally and instructionally appropriate health and fitness programs.

Model School:  The cutting edge of physical education

“As the nation faces a growing childhood obesity crisis, we in the California school community have the unique opportunity to provide quality instructional programs in physical education and nutrition education, and model healthy eating and physical activity environments for California’s children. I challenge all of California’s district superintendents and school districts to make their students’ nutritional health and physical fitness a priority” (California Department of Education Superintendent Jack O’Connell, 2003).

Currently in Fresno, the Mayor’s Fitness Council (MFC) is aiming to improve overall nutritional health and physical fitness of children in the community.  In conjunction with the MFC, the Teacher Preparation Option in the Department of Kinesiology at CSU, Fresno is seeking any elementary school in FUSD that a will support developmentally and instructionally physical education program that will support the superintendent’s challenge, please contact any of the following individuals:

 DANELLA  BARNES

ELEMENTARY PHYSICAL EDUCATION DIRECTOR

SANGER UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT

Sanger Unified School District (SUSD) has continued to place quality elementary physical education as a priority. Through the relentless efforts of Daniela Barnes, the SUSD elementary physical education program continues to hire elementary physical educators.  One benefit of this program affords the classroom educator time to focus on state curriculum standards while the physical educator addresses the nutritional and physical needs of the students.
