How Attendance Grades are Computed |
The way I determine your attendance grade is complicated, but it rests on the idea that a consistent pattern of coming to class is rewarded, and persistent skipping of several classes in a row is punished. |
On the positive side, you get 2 points for each day you come to class on time and stay the whole time, plus 1 reward point per week if you have had perfect attendance that whole week. |
This term there are 42 class meetings, and the maximum score (for perfect attendance) is 100. (How'd I get that?)
If you are late or otherwise miss up to 15 minutes of a class, you get 1 point for that day (and no reward for that week). |
On the negative side, you get 0 points for each day you miss more than 15 minutes of a class, plus -1 punishment point for every day in a row you have currently missed. For example, if you miss one day but come back the next class, you get 0 for the day you missed (plus you lose your bonus for that week) but the next day your score is 2, for a total of 2 for those two days. If you miss three classes in a row your scores for those days are 0, -1 and -2, for a total loss of 3 points (-3). |
Your minimum attendance grade is 0, so if you (heaven forbid) end up with a negative score at the end of the term, it will be counted as 0. |
Here are some examples to compare. Attendance grades are shown for five hypothetical students for two weeks, assuming they all attended the previous Friday:
You can see how skipping even one class every two weeks can really hurt your grade!
