Math 76 Old News
- 1/17
- This site is still under construction. Watch this space for periodic updates throughout the course.
- The secret quote for the course is, "Mathematics is not the science of numbers and computations, but rather the tool of abstraction, generalization, and proof."
- 1/22
- There was a typo on the paper homework list involving deadlines several weeks in the future. It has now been fixed.
- 1/24
- WeBWorK is now set up for all currently enrolled students. Look for an email in your @csufresno inbox for details.
- For those students still waiting to enroll: I will be sending emails by tomorrow afternoon confirming (or denying) admittance to the class. If you are admitted you will also receive instructions for logging in to your WeBWorK account.

- The calculus tutoring lab is now open for the semester, in ED 161. You can check the hours here. This is a great place to sit and do homework with other students and get help. Please make it a part of your week! You can also try the Learning Center, in the Peters Annex trailers.
- 2/5
- A student in our class has said that 6.2 #67 (the bonus problem) does not exist in his copy of the textbook. I have not personally verified that there is a difference between the copy I have (which is labelled "instructor edition") and the edition you purchased. However, just in case, I have put a copy of the problem here. Please let me know if you have any questions.
- 2/6
- As far as I can tell, the note above under 2/5 was a false alarm. If you disagree, please let me know as I would like to have accurate problem sets!
- New item for download, available above under Exams and Practice Exams: solutions to today's quiz.
- New item for download, available above under Exams and Practice Exams: a collection of practice problems for next week's midterm. Solutions will be available soon.
- New item for download, available above under Exams and Practice Exams: more practice problems, from the old edition of the textbook. The more of these you do, the better prepared you will be for the test. Please note, however, that you may ignore #53 as it uses hyperbolic functions which are not covered in this course. Solutions to these problems are also available above, though I see that they may be difficult to read. I will try to re-scan them if I get a chance, or you may email me with questions about any you cannot make out. Also, the solutions may contain references to page numbers or theorems, etc. that do not match what is in our text. Please let me know if there is anything you would like clarified about the solutions.
- Do you get nervous before exams? Your first line of defense is to be as well-prepared as possible. The following suggestions may help:
- Practice all the types of problems many times, until you reach a high level of accuracy and feel completely comfortable.
- Talk over difficult problems and concepts with your study group; you might try doing this at the tutoring lab, where you can get help if your group gets stuck.
- Of course, you should not hesitate to see me (or email me) with any questions.
With continued study and practice everyone in our class is capable of doing well on the exam. I will be rooting for all of you! Good luck!

- New item for download, available above under Exams and Practice Exams: solutions to the practice problems. Important. I have not exhaustively proofread these solutions. (I am concentrating on making sure the actual exam is error-free!) If you find any errors or typos in these solutions, please let me know as soon as possible so I can fix them.
- A reminder that our problem session this week will have a different start time and will be longer to give us extra time to go over problems before the test. It will be from 3:45 to 5:15pm. It will be beneficial to you and to everyone else if you have thoroughly gone over the solutions to the practice problems before this session (see above). I will be happy to answer any questions that are asked; however, we will have time for many more questions if everyone is asking questions like, "In your solutions, on #3, I get all the steps except this part...", rather than, "I didn't get #3. No, I haven't tried to read your solutions."
- I am planning to cancel office hours this Friday except by appointment, since there is no paper homework due and we will have just taken a midterm. If you wish to see me on Friday afternoon please let me know.
