Information for teachers / advisers

Purpose

The purpose of this event is to provide capable students with the opportunity to meet and compete with students from other schools and to receive recognition that they so richly deserve. We believe that this event provides a unique learning situation for students, and that recognition of their participation will serve to stimulate their interest in mathematics and encourage continuation of their mathematical endeavors. Each student receives a copy of the test questions, with answers, immediately following the event and is given the opportunity to ask questions about the solutions. Each participant receives a certificate acknowledging participation in the Field Day, and awards are given to the highest finishers. We hope you will take advantage of this opportunity to involve both students and their advisers in a day designed for mathematical enrichment and enjoyment.

Team scoring

A high school's team score is the sum of the school scores from each of the following contests: Mad Hatter 11-12, Mad Hatter 9-10, Leap Frog 9-12, and Game Tournament. A middle school's team score is the sum of the school scores from each of the following contests: Mad Hatter 6-8, Leap Frog 6-8, Game Tournament. A school's score in a contest is determined by the ranking of the top finisher from that school, relative to the ranking of the top finishers from each of the other schools entered in that contest. If n schools participate in a certain contest, then the school which finishes in the k-th place relative to the other schools shall receive 100(n-k+1)/n points for the contest. Top schools will receive awards. Since top individuals will be recognized, schools are encouraged to participate even if they do not have entrants in all contests. However, to maximize your chances of winning as a team you should try to enter at least one or two students in each contest.

Parking

Parking on campus is free on weekends. You can park anywhere in green (for students and visitors) or yellow (for faculty and staff) parking lots.

Lunch break

There will be a lunch break between the contests and the awards ceremony. Participants can either bring their lunch with them or purchase lunch on campus.

Vintage days

Math Field Day is taking place during "Vintage Days" on the CSU, Fresno campus. There will not only be food available that participants may purchase, but there will be a craft sale and carnival complete with rides, game booths, and live music.

Teachers' lounge

Teachers and advisers are welcome (and encouraged!) to use the lounge located in PB 390 while their students are competing. There will be breakfast available in the morning, and lunch around 12:30 PM.
